The Eastern Wild Turkey

Hunting Strategies 23/05/2008

Hunting turkeys below the top of a ridge or hill top where they like to roast in trees. This one gobbler in particular that I was hunting would fly down from there and travel down to the bottom of a saddle every day. My first hunt in this location was almost successful. I set up at a large tree on a fence row about half way up the hill. With a mouth call I sounded off a few yelps and got a gobble from the bottom of the hill. I kept silent and he gobbled again and sounded closer. A crow sounded off and the tom gobbled again, sounding closer yet. I continued to stay silent and the tom gobbled again but I could not see him in the long grass. I could now hear him strutting as he gobbled again, but now the sounds where coming from my side of the fence row about 30 yards out in a field. I answered back with some soft purrs and he gobbled again as the last 10 min. of legal hunting time elasped. He must have spotted me as  I never did see him and the bird went silent and disappeared.

My hunt on this bird will continue....
